What is horror? 
Is your horror my horror?

Defining horror fiction is more difficult than one might expect. The Horror Writers Association starts with the definition of horror as an intense fear, dread or dismay. Thus, horror fiction causes the reader to have those emotions. Horror 
can deal with everyday life or the supernatural, can, but does not necessarily, contain elements of fantasy. 


It can, but does not have to be full of “ghoulies and ghosties, long-leggedy beasties, things that go bump in the night”. It does not need buckets of gore. It can be macabre and sick or deceptively ordinary. It usually contains an element of wrongness, an unexplained and unexpected pervasive evil. 


Its most important requirement is that it sets out to elicit an emotional response of fear and dread in the reader. If you enjoy being scared, if you enjoy a shiver down the spine, there are many books that will do just that…
